Serenity Breeze fuller bust dress

How Our Sizing Works: We Size to Your Bust, Not Your Bra Tag

Quick answer: BodyCon the Brand sizes its fuller bust dresses by bust measurement, not bra size. Measure the fullest part of your bust, match it to the chart (XS 34-36" up to XXL 49-51"), then check your waist: if your waist falls in a bigger size, take the bigger size. Our dresses are designed for DD cups and up.

If you've ever ordered a dress in your "usual" size and couldn't zip it past your ribs, this post is for you. Here's the short version: at BodyCon the Brand, you pick your size by your bust measurement, not your bra size and not the size you wear everywhere else. Then you check your waist. That's it.

Below is exactly how it works, why we do it this way, and three real examples so you can see it in action.

Why we don't size by bra size

Your bra size is two numbers pretending to be one. The band (the 32 in 32G) is your ribcage. The cup (the G) is the difference between your ribcage and your bust. So a 32G and a 38DD can have almost the same bust measurement, but completely different bodies.

Regular clothing brands ignore this. They grade their patterns off a B-cup fit model and assume that if your bust gets bigger, your waist, shoulders and hips get bigger at the same rate. That's why a fuller bust puts you "between sizes" everywhere: the size that fits your chest swims on your waist, and the size that fits your waist won't close over your chest.

We design the other way around. Every dress starts with the bust, with the support built in (structured cups, boning and corset backs), and then the waist is tailored to fit. So the number that matters most is the one around the fullest part of your chest.

Step 1: Measure your bust and waist

You need a soft tape measure and about two minutes. Measure in the bra you'd normally wear, or no bra if you plan to go braless in our dresses (most people do).

  • Bust: wrap the tape around the fullest part of your chest. Keep it level all the way around your back and snug, not tight.
  • Waist: measure the narrowest part of your torso, usually just above your belly button.

Write both numbers down in inches.

Step 2: Match your bust to the chart

Find the size whose bust range your measurement falls in. That's your starting size.

Size Bust (in) Waist (in)
XS 34–36 25–28
S 37–39 29–31
M 40–42 32–34
L 43–45 35–38
XL 46–48 39–41
XXL 49–51 42–44

If you land between two ranges, go up. A 39.5" bust is a Medium, not a Small. Our corset backs let you cinch a slightly bigger size in. There's no fix for a bodice that's too small across the chest.

Step 3: Check your waist

Now look at which size your waist falls in:

  • Waist is the same size as your bust, or bigger: go with the bigger of the two. If your bust says Medium and your waist says Large, order the Large.
  • Waist is one size smaller than your bust: stick with your bust size. This is the classic fuller bust shape, and it's exactly who we design for. The corset back takes in the waist.
  • Waist is two or more sizes smaller than your bust: email us before you order. At that ratio the right answer depends on the style, and we'd rather tell you than guess.

Three real examples

These are the actual measurements of the women who model our dresses. You've probably seen them on our product pages.

Kalia (founder): 32G bra, 38" bust, 29" waist → Small

Bust 38" falls in Small (37–39). Waist 29" also falls in Small (29–31). Both agree, so it's a Small. In most mainstream brands a 32G is stuck choosing between an XS that crushes her chest and a Medium that gapes at the waist.

Amari: 38H bra, 41" bust, 38" waist → Large

Bust 41" is a Medium, but waist 38" is a Large. The waist is the bigger size, so we go with the Large. The adjustable back and bust lacing handle the extra room up top.

Chia: 40H bra, 46" bust, 37" waist → XL

Bust 46" is an XL. Waist 37" is a Large, one size smaller. That's the classic fuller bust ratio, so we size to the bust: XL, with the corset back cinched in at the waist.

Notice that none of these women "wear" the size you'd guess from their bra. That's the whole point.

What about my cup size?

Your cup size doesn't choose your size. It tells you whether a style was built for you. Our dresses are designed for DD cups and up: the Empress supports up to a J cup, and the Prism Corset goes up to a K. If you're a D or smaller, most of our pieces will feel roomy in the cup.

Style-by-style notes

  • Serenity Breeze and Serenity Breeze Mini: corset back and adjustable straps (plus lace-up bust detail on the full-length). Very forgiving if you're right on a line between sizes.
  • The Empress: structured boning and a lace-up open back, fully adjustable. Same rules apply.
  • Prism Corset: this one has no adjustable back, so it's the least forgiving. Follow the chart carefully and size up if you're in doubt.

Still not sure? Ask us.

Seriously. Send your bust, waist and bra size to kalia@bodyconthebrand.com or message us on Instagram, and a real person (usually me) will tell you your size. And if it's not right when it arrives, exchanges are easy.

You've spent long enough squeezing into clothes that weren't made for you. Measure once, pick your size, and let the dress do the work.

Frequently asked questions

What size should I order if I'm a 32G?

It depends on your bust and waist measurements, not your bra size. For example, our founder is a 32G with a 38" bust and 29" waist and wears a Small. Match your bust measurement to the BodyCon size chart first, then check your waist.

Should I size up or down if I'm between sizes?

Size up. BodyCon dresses have adjustable corset backs that cinch a slightly bigger size in, but a bodice that is too small across the bust cannot be fixed.

Why doesn't bra size work for choosing a dress size?

A bra size combines ribcage size and cup size. Two people with very different bodies, like a 32G and a 38DD, can have similar bust measurements. Sizing to the actual bust measurement is more accurate.

What cup sizes does BodyCon the Brand fit?

BodyCon the Brand designs for DD cups and up. The Empress Dress supports up to a J cup and the Prism Corset Top goes up to a K cup.
